What are electrolytes?

In the world of nutrition we use the word "electrolyte" to refer to minerals that are dissolved in our body's fluids and create electrically charged ions. We need these ions to function as they keep our cells, tissues and fluids active and able to communicate within our bodies. Minerals like sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and others are all electrolytes and they each play a special role in keeping our heart beating, muscles contracting and nerves firing.

Did you know that when you are dehydrated your body actually absorbs fluids faster when there is some sugar present? The presence of sugars, also known as carbohydrates, drives the water into your cells faster because it creates an osmotic pressure gradient. If you drink straight water your body will absorb the fluids but this absorption will be slower. Hydration science shows that some sugar is best for fast absorption. As your muscles work hard during exercise these carbohydrates also provide a great fast burning energy source. This is why Hidrate uses the minimum amount of organic cane sugar needed to maximize hydration.
